Aviva to withdraw from iPMI market to focus on domestic UK health insurance

Print This Post

Aviva, the UK’s largest general insurer and a leading life and pensions provider, in January 2018 announced its intention to withdraw from the international private medical insurance (iPMI) market, following a strategic review which found that iPMI “is not central” to the company’s focus on growing its health business in the UK.

As of 1 May 2018, existing iPMI customers will be able to continue coverage by accepting a policy renewal with Aetna International. Existing Aviva customers who renew their policy will then become Aetna customers and will no longer have a relationship with Aviva, which had provided cover for UK customers who are living abroad.

Aviva will continue to operate its substantial UK private medical insurance business, as well as its health businesses in other international markets, which are unaffected by this decision.

David Healy, CEO EMEA of Aetna International, said that Aetna is committed to delivering Aviva’s iPMI customers continuation of cover and that the new coverage will provide comparable benefits.
