IFEBP annual conference sets out a practical benefits governance agenda

In October 2026, the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans listed its 72nd Annual Employee Benefits Conference for 25 to 28 October in New Orleans. The programme provides an opportunity to frame practical questions across health, retirement, administration and fiduciary responsibilities.

The organiser advertises more than 120 sessions and a virtual option. These are programme features, not evidence of completed sessions, actual attendance or improved plan outcomes. This advance analysis uses the programme available on 25 October; its original publication date is not established.

Collect evidence that can support a decision

For health benefits, a useful follow-up could identify a specific access problem, the affected population and how resolution was measured. For retirement, it should specify the plan type and the decision supported. Defined benefit funding and defined contribution communication should not be treated as interchangeable examples.

Administrative cases could also be tested against governance questions: who owns the process, how exceptions are escalated and what evidence reaches the responsible committee. A technology demonstration should be distinguished from a measured implementation result.

These are proposed reporting questions. They do not describe conclusions already reached at the conference.

Apply the learning selectively

Multinational teams would need to assess local legal duties, plan structures and delivery systems before transferring a US example. A limited pilot might be appropriate where an idea is promising but its relevance remains uncertain.

An internal debrief could select one issue, record the supporting evidence and assign an owner to assess the next step. It should also explain why an idea is declined or requires further verification. The useful outcome would be a reviewable benefits decision, rather than a list of sessions attended or an assumption that conference participation has itself improved governance. Attributable evidence from subsequent presentations would be needed before reporting a specific conference finding.
