Lloyds publishes trans and non-binary inclusion guide

In the interest of fostering a more stable work environment for trans and non-binary workers, Lloyd’s of London in December 2019 published a guide for the insurance sector that helps managers understand how to make trans and non-binary employees feel included in the workplace.

The proportion of colleagues who identify as trans or non-binary could rise from about 4% to as high as 20%, as younger people, many of whom reject gender binaries, join the workforce, and the push to foster a stable emotional work environment for trans and non-binary colleagues comes after a survey that found nearly 500 people working in the insurance market had either suffered or observed sexual harassment in the past 12 months.

The guide, produced in partnership with Global Butterflies, a company that helps businesses improve their understanding of issues relating to trans and non-binary people, includes advice on issues such as how to ask someone which pronouns they use to describe themselves.

Managers are also advised to help make colleagues feel welcome by including their own pronouns in email signatures (“he/him/his” or “she/her/hers” for example), and offers thoughts on how to be an effective ally to trans and non-binary people, including speaking out against transphobic behaviour.
