Professor Hamer graduated in Sport and Exercise Science (1996) at The University of Birmingham, completed an MSc in Sports Sciences (1999) at Brunel University and later received his PhD from De Montfort University (2002). He spent eleven years at University College London as a researcher in Epidemiology and Public Health funded by the British Heart Foundation. In 2015 he was appointed as Chair in Exercise as Medicine at the National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine. He is currently PI on the age 46 biomedical assessment of the 1970 British Cohort Study, and also leads research on the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing, Health Survey for England, and The Whitehall II Study.
