Swiss Re Advice on Reopening Public Spaces in the Wake of Covid-19

Global reinsurer Swiss Re [1] in November 2020 advised employers on reducing the risk of exposure to the COVID-19 virus by cleaning [2] and disinfection when reopening public spaces.

In a nutshell, Swiss Re considers that whilst “most employers have considered the impact of increased cleaning requirements on their workforce; […], some may not have considered other related risks and how to prevent any potential resulting losses.”

The company has written a loss prevention report that looks at some of the general liability risks brought by the increased cleaning, sanitization, and disinfection requirements when restarting operations.

These risks include reputational and financial risks, should an organization’s premises be found to be the center of a local outbreak; risks linked to untested disinfection methods; and unexpected wear and tear of products, property and machinery. In the rush to reopen premises, it can also be easy to forget the necessity of proper planning and documentation.

The report highlights the great number of untested “solutions” that have mushroomed recently and instead advises to implement and follow COVID-19 infection prevention measures announced by National Health Agencies on a country-by-country basis.
