Swiss Re in December 2017 announced their intent to merge the Group Chief Financial Officer and Group Chief Strategy Officer roles, bringing the total number of Group Executive Committee members to 12.
The world’s second-largest reinsurer will also propose adding three new members to its Board of Directors when they hold their annual general meeting on April 20.
Karen Gavan, Eileen Rominger, and Larry Zimpleman are expected to replace outgoing members Rajna Gibson Brandon, Mary Francis and C. Robert Henrikson.
Gibson Brandon has decided to step down after 17 years as a member of Swiss Re’s Board of Directors, where she serves on the Finance and Risk Committee as well as the Investment Committee. Current board members Mary Francis and C. Robert Henrikson are due to retire. Francis was elected to Swiss Re’s Board in 2013 and is a member of the Audit Committee as well as the Finance and Risk Committee, and Henrikson was elected to Swiss Re’s Board of Directors in 2012 and has been the Chairman of the Compensation Committee as well as a member of the Chairman’s and Governance and the Finance and Risk committees.
‘Rob’ Henrikson was Chairman and CEO of MetLife from 2006 to 2011. Before, he held senior positions in MetLife’s individual, group and pension businesses, including President of MetLife’s Institutional division, and became Chief Operating Officer of the company in 2004. He also was co-chairman of the MAXIS pooling network from 1999 to 2004. He is a former Chairman of the American Council of Life Insurers and of the Financial Services Forum, Director Emeritus of the American Benefits Council and a former member of the U.S. President’s Export Council.
Karen Gavan, who began her career with Prudential Insurance, Imperial Life, and Canada Life, was CFO and COO at Transamerica Life Canada/AEGON Canada, and CEO at Economical Insurance until her retirement in 2016. She prepared Economical Insurance for its initial public offering and helped the company launch SONNET, Canada’s first fully-digital insurer. She has been a member of the Board of Swiss Re America since 2015, and a board member at Mackenzie Financial since 2007.
Eileen Rominger began her career at Oppenheimer Capital, where she worked for 18 years as an equity portfolio manager and ultimately serving as managing director and as a member of the Executive Committee. She joined Goldman Sachs Asset Management in 1999 and held increasingly senior leadership positions there until finally attaining the position of Global Chief Investment Officer. Rominger served as the Director of the Division of Investment Management for the US Securities and Exchange Commission, where she was instrumental in formulating and implementing regulatory policy for mutual funds and federally registered investment advisors. She has also been a senior adviser at CamberView Partners, a leading provider of advice on shareholder engagement, corporate governance, and activism.
Larry Zimpleman started his 44-year career in 1971 as an actuarial intern at The Principal Financial Group, working through the ranks to attain senior management and leadership positions from 1976 to 2006. Named President and CEO in 2008, and Chairman in 2009, Zimpleman stepped down in August 2015 to become a full-time employee until his retirement in 2016.
