UK employers to get ‘toolkit’ to help them register EU workers

The UK’s Home Office in August 2018 unveiled a package of briefing packs, posters and leaflets, the “EU Settlement Scheme: employer toolkit” to help staff from the EU to register for a new immigration status that will be legally required after Brexit. An estimated 3.5 million to 3.8 million EU citizens live and work in the UK.

Among the employers and groups present at the launch were the British Retail Consortium, the Confederation of British Industry, and pharmaceutical corporation GSK.

However, EU citizens in the UK and Britons on the continent still have no legal guarantee of their status post-Brexit. But it is understood that all EU citizens living in the UK up to and, for a limited period, beyond Brexit day will be eligible to apply for “settled status”.

The Home Office announced a pilot scheme which will run in the north-west of the UK in late August, and said it was looking for 4,000 recruits in universities and the NHS. The full scheme is intended to be rolled out in 2019.

The toolkit is available on the gov.uk website.
