Cross-border IORPs Data for 2021 from EIOPA
The European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (EIOPA) in December 2022 published a report on cross-border Institutions for Occupational Retirement Provisions (IORPs), i.e. corporate pension plans, in the European Economic Area (EEA).
According to EIOPA, the number of active cross-border IORPs fell from 33 in 2020 to 31 in 2021. Such plans cover approximately 93,000 members and beneficiaries and manage assets worth around €13bn, up from 70,000 members and €11.3bn of assets under management in 2020. Cross-border arrangements, as opposed to single-country plans, represent only 0.2 per cent of all members and beneficiaries and 0.4 per cent of total assets of IORPs.
As of 2021, most cross border IORPs are of Defined Benefit (DB) nature and close to half of them are multi-employer plans.
The Netherlands is the host country of the largest number of active cross-border IORPs; and Belgium is home member state by far to most members and beneficiaries of cross-border IORPs.
