Pension risk transfers account for much of RGA premium growth

Single premiums illuminate transaction activity but should be separated from recurring growth

In November 2026, Reinsurance Group of America reported that roughly US$800 million of its third-quarter net premiums came from single-premium US pension risk transfer transactions. The 5 November release covered the quarter ended 30 September. Consolidated net premiums rose 25% to US$5.35 billion from US$4.28 billion. The comparable quarter had no contribution from these transactions.

Separate transaction flows from the recurring base

The disclosed amount represents roughly three quarters of the year-on-year increase in net premiums. Removing it for illustration leaves about US$4.55 billion, roughly 6% above the previous total. This calculation uses rounded figures and does not adjust for currency, business mix or other transactions. It should not be presented as an organic growth rate.

RGA also reported US$558 million in adjusted operating income, compared with US$310 million a year earlier or US$424 million excluding prior-year notable items. These non-GAAP comparisons do not establish how profitable the pension deals were. A large premium received at closing can finance years of benefit payments and says little on its own about recurring sales.

Use the results to sharpen due diligence

Sponsors and trustees can use the figures as evidence of transaction activity, then ask who owes the member benefits, how reinsurance fits into the structure and what remains the sponsor’s responsibility. The work should address data corrections, payment continuity, asset and longevity risk and the ability to meet cash flows if assumptions disappoint.

The distinction matters for a multinational benefits team comparing providers across markets. Track transaction size, member protections and ongoing obligations separately. A strong quarter can justify closer examination of a counterparty, but the terms, legal structure and service arrangements of the proposed deal are what determine the practical outcome for a pension scheme.
