Australia Training visa applications now require earlier sponsor and nomination approvals
Australia’s Migration Amendment (Training Visas—Sponsorship Requirements) Regulations 2026 were published on 10 March and take effect on 11 March 2026. For Training visa subclass 407 applications, the changes require the relevant sponsorship and nomination approvals to be in place before a valid visa application can be lodged, subject to the provisions and exceptions in the instrument.
The practical change is the order of the process. Employers should not assume that submitting sponsorship, nomination and visa applications together remains an available way to preserve the timetable for a new training placement. Home Affairs’ guidance explains the approved sponsor and nomination requirements, including the position of Commonwealth government agencies.
Rebuild the assignment timetable This editor recommends working backwards from the intended training start date. The organisation should identify the approvals needed, who prepares each application and which dependency prevents the next step from proceeding. A target start date is a planning assumption until the necessary approvals and visa position support it.
The review should include any person already in Australia whose existing permission may expire before the revised sequence is completed. An employer’s willingness to sponsor does not establish that a person can remain, work or obtain a bridging arrangement. Those questions require an assessment of the individual’s circumstances and the applicable visa rules.
Keep the training purpose visible The subclass 407 route concerns occupational training. Home Affairs states that it is not intended to fill workforce shortages. Organisations should therefore examine the substance of the proposed training and the responsibilities attached to the arrangement, rather than treating the route as a substitute for a sponsored employment visa.
HR and the host team can use the review to clarify the training plan, supervision and expected activities. Practical preparations should also cover the financial support and health-insurance evidence identified in the official guidance. The visa application sequence and the assignment’s benefits arrangements need to be considered together.
Make communications match the process Candidates should receive an explanation of what is approved, what is pending and what remains conditional. The employer can separate administrative preparation from commitments about travel, accommodation and the start of activities.
A useful internal record would preserve the publication date, commencement date and the requirements used for the particular case. This reduces the risk of applying a newsletter’s receipt date as though it were the effective date of a rule and gives later reviewers a clear account of the basis for the assignment plan.
