Gallagher Report: Strategic Maturity Key to Communication Success as AI Gap Widens
Strategic maturity remains the strongest predictor of success for internal communication teams, with well-socialized strategies helping organizations reduce risk and exceed performance targets, according to Gallagher’s 2026 Employee Communications Report, published in March 2026.
The study of over 1,300 communications and HR professionals across 40 countries reveals a widening “Readiness Gap” between organizational needs and current capabilities. Organizations with high communication volumes experience a 30% jump in leadership trust risks, while 87% identify manager capability as a significant threat to communication goals.
AI adoption highlights this strategic divide most clearly. While three-quarters of communication functions remain stuck in early-stage AI discussions, organizations with formal AI governance are significantly more likely to use the technology for sophisticated workflows rather than basic tasks. Only 36% of teams feel AI-ready, though this jumps to 61% when proper governance structures exist.
The report identifies four key priorities for 2026:
- embedding communication strategy into business planning,
- building workforce readiness for change,
- streamlining operational processes, and
- delivering human-centric communication experiences.
Fewer than one in five organizations currently feel satisfied with their content personalization capabilities.
As constant change becomes the new normal, communication teams must evolve from administrative functions to strategic partners driving organizational transformation.
